The Alzheimer’s Disease and Caregiver Support Program will generate awareness and support for Alzheimer’s programming and research. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia and one of the fastest growing health challenges among African Americans.

Heart disease is the #1 killer for all Americans and stroke is the fifth leading cause of death, affecting African Americans. Stroke is the major cause of serius disability. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® has partnered with the American Heart Association to raise awareness and implement health-related activities about preventative measures to decrease the incidence of stroke and cardiovascular disease. Stroke and Heart Disease Awareness will remain a focus area as Alpha Kappa Alpha launches a major stroke prevention awareness campaign with emphasis on hypertension management, diet and exercise.
Mental Health will be highlighted as members bring attention to the mental illness among diverse populations with low utilization of mental health services. Mental health problems and illness are real and disabling conditions that are experienced by 1 in 5 Americans. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® has partnered with the National Alliance on Mental Illness to raise awareness and health related activities to improve the quality of life for African American individuals and families who are impacted by mental conditions and or serious mental illnesses.
