Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. targets critical issues facing many families including lack of food, shelter and financial means via the following target areas:
The right to adequate clothing is recognized as a human right by various international human rights organizations. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will make ensure the families in our local communities have access to appropriate seasonal clothing (e.g., hats, gloves, socks, scarves, coats, sweaters, etc.), whatever the climate.
Millions of children live in households that lack the resources to obtain enough nutritious food on a regular basis. The rate of food insecurity is substantially higher among single parent households, households where the incomes are near or below the poverty line, and African American and Hispanic households. Children who do not receive proper nutrition struggle with concentrating in school, perform at lower levels academically, and have extreme headaches and stomach aches.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. combats Childhood Hunger by providing children with access to nutritious snacks, (e.g., healthy cereal) and easy-to-prepare food that they need to perform well academically.
Roughly 60% of families spend all or more than they earn each year. When families are spending more than they even have, it can be difficult to save. It’s even more difficult for low-income families who face the same pressing needs as others, but on a much more meager income. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. encourages fiscal responsibility and stability among families by engaging in financial literacy campaigns. Members work with partner organizations and families to help increase their understanding of budgeting, basic financial planning and benefits of home ownership.
